Not That...

There is ever increasing research that certain chemicals in products can significantly impact the long term health of a child. These are; BPA, Formaldehyde, Petroleum, Phthalates, Lead, and Dyes.

A few years back I wrote about the "Stroller Brigades".  A group of fierce mothers who took it upon themselves to lobby against the use of these chemicals in children's products. It is an issue that is ever evolving but still needs more gospel. Products are allowed to fill the market place everyday with no oversight.

It is unrealistic to avoid all of these products in our modern society. Although, you can have a significant influence on your child's exposure to them by making smart choices when purchasing new products. Back to school is a good time to re-commit!

Here are some suggestions:

PLASTICS - If you are purchasing plastic containers make sure they are BPA free.
BPA is much more toxic to infants and toddlers developing endocrine systems. These chemicals may lead to health problems down the line. It is best to avoid with children. Try to use steel containers or glass when available.

BACKPACKS - Look for something that is made with a natural fiber. If you do go with a plastic based backpack, choose a brand that is eco -friendly. Mainstream backpacks have been shown to contain unhealthy levels of Phthalates, Lead, and other toxins.
You can find them at natural groceries and major retailers.  Just as cute and something for your little one to preach about at the lunch table.  Education is everything with the next generation!

Be Well,
Kim
