The rise of veganism.
Cashew Spinach Pesto
I have practiced a plant based diet for many years. It comes from the need to feel better, have more energy, and be preventative. Veganism is all the rage throughout the country. Plant based restaurants are popping up, products are in our local CVS, and new careers are being forged in this arena.
The Merriam-Webster dictionary defines a vegan as "a strict vegetarian who consumes no animal food or diary products." I became a vegetarian when I was 16 and went back to chicken, eggs, and fish in my early twenties. My reason for becoming a vegetarian was political. I had written a report on a slaughter house and was horrified by the findings! Still to this day, I do not eat red meat, pork, lamb, etc.. I did end up going back to eating some lean animal protein at the suggestion of my doctor. For myself the lack of animal based protein had wreaked havoc on my body. Causing low iron levels and a very weak state. I attribute this to my lack of proper information on how to manage my nutrient intake by getting all my essential nutrition throughout the day. Back then we did not have the resources we have today.
Veganism is truly a healthy lifestyle but I can tell you it is not the right diet for all. I look years younger for my age and I attribute this to a lean protein rich diet. For myself, protein works! So, before you jump on the band wagon continue reading. If you need help finding more appropriate resources, please contact me.
What are the benefits?- A plant based diet has increased benefits of antioxidant rich food, may lower blood pressure, cholesterol, and weight.
What are the negatives?- Hormonal imbalance and loss of essential vitamins and minerals. For example, nutrient and iron deficiency because of lack of supplementation of animal protein. Also, vanity purposes (might get me in trouble!) due to loss of muscle mass resulting in premature aging. Lack of proper amino acids may result in loss of elasticity and a not so great complexion.
What is the connection to Sustainability? - Meat production is very taxing on the environment and our resources. Pollution is caused through fossil fuel usage, excessive water consumption, animal methane, and land consumption. All resulting in a significant contribution to climate change. It is important to note that most of the destructive animal protein is from red meat (cow). If our population limited but did not eliminate their intake that would be significant. That being said, making a political statement that effects your health negatively is not the way to go. If this diet is not correct for you there are many other ways to reduce your impact on the environment. For example, stop using plastic bags or chemical based products.
Balance is key to successfully becoming a vegan. Many have raved of the positive benefits it has made in their life, along with an enhanced political sense of purpose by nurturing the environment and not killing animals. Whatever path you choose make sure you have a plan. Seek collaboration with a medical professional to make sure you maintain optimal health and vitality.
Be Well,
Kim
