New York state plastic bag ban.

Governor Cuomo has announced that there will be an official ban of plastic bags in New York State starting March 2020.  New York will follow California and Hawaii with a state wide plastic bag ban.
Paper bags will be provided or you will have to bring your own reusable bag.

I had written an article on the "New York City plastic bag debate"(GreenhomeNYC) in March 2017. It will have taken three years and multiple attempts in Albany to get to a resolution. Let's hope it is implemented and here are some reminders for why it is such a wonderful development!

  • The average New Yorker disposes of 20 bags per week.
  • $12.5 million in public sanitation money is spent each year to dispose of wasted bags.
  • Billions of bags enter the waste stream at the end of their lifecycle, either in a landfill or littering the environment.
  • Plastic degrades over time, releasing the toxic additives it contains.

According to The New York League of Conservation Voters, if a law was in place, it’s estimated that New York City would decrease single-use plastic bag consumption from 10 billion bags per year.

Be Well with the more you know in 2019,
Kim
