Holiday Cashmere.
Not all cashmere is created equal. Firstly, wool is one of the best sustainable fibers. Wool is renewable and 100 percent bio degradable. It is easy to clean and flame retardant. It also regulates temperature through thermal insulation properties adjusting to cooler or warmer climates. Hypoallergenic, wool has antibacterial properties, meaning it is resistant to bacteria. One benefit is your cashmere products have to be washed less!
What type of cashmere should I purchase?
Look for companies that promote their sustainability practices and socially responsible cashmere. Cashmere is sourced from areas such as Mongolia that are being devastated by climate change. The regional issues have caused farming to become less prevalent and its animals to suffer with the changing climate. As a result, there is production in China which is not at all sustainable. It is better to buy less of cashmere and know where it is coming from. The alternative is to buy recycled cashmere. Companies such as J crew and other large retailers have started participating in "The Good Cashmere Standard - responsible cashmere that aims to improve the welfare of cashmere goats and farmers." Along with investment in underserved communities like Mongolia.
Gift giving should be FUN at the holidays. Do not forgo that cashmere hat, sweater, or scarf. Suggesting the solution is to do a quick search and see what brand offer cashmere which is not depleting our natural resources!!! Have fun.
Be Well in 2021,
KIM
